~Goodbye Grocery Store Grind, Hello Family Time!
~

I safe to say that no one enjoys grocery shopping. The drive, the lines, the chill, down to the squeaky carts and product shortages. Caught up in the joyful sometimes, hectic chaos of our daily lives, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. It’s no wonder we’re all tempted to skip the trip for more convenient options, and we’re here to say: you shouldn’t feel guilty. We understand the struggle and we all do it.

I

It’s a pain but – grocery shopping is one of those unavoidable after all, right?

Well… it doesn’t have to be.

More and more families are switching to Farm-to-Freezer lifestyles not only to spare themselves from time-draining trips but because these services bring a certain mealtime zen that isn’t possible with traditional grocery shopping.

Let’s break it down then. Think about these 5 Grocery Store Facts the next time you’re waiting in line with a full cart for that single cash register to open.

1. How long do we actually spend in the grocery store?

According to reports from the nasdaq, families typically go grocery shopping 1-2 times a week and spend anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour there. Be aware that this is not including the time spent getting to and from the store.

This means, we all spend a minimum of 60 hours grocery shopping per year! (And this number can grow with larger families!) What would you do with more time?

Here’s what we’d like to do:

  • Learn a new hobby
  • Add one more work out a week to our fitness routine
  • Go to more hockey games
  • Take more naps
  • Have more family time

And meal kits and food delivery can only take you so far, since you often don’t know what you are getting and the looming expiration dates provide no comfort in your resolution to cook more meals at home.

2. Do you end up going to the grocery store after work?

Many of us not only have a family, but also work a 9-5 on top of it. We’re sure you notice a much larger crowd than normal! That’s because weekdays between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. are the most popular times to shop. And, as we all know, going to the store when you’re hungry causes us to overspend and purchase higher calorie or unhealthy items. We say, why fight the crowds when you don’t have to?

3. How often do you swear you came to buy ONE thing?

Most of us know this scenario. “I only need to pick up milk,” but then we end up lugging away way more from the store than we bargained for. The temptation trap of processed foods is all around us and that’s on purpose! Studies show, the biggest chunk of the shopping budget goes toward the middle aisles of the store.

Nearly 25% of grocery shopping dollars are spent on processed foods and sweets! So, trying to kick those unhealthy habits or stick to those New Year’s Resolutions is way harder when temptation’s stares you right in the face!

4. How many things do you TOUCH at the grocery store?

With flu season at hand, it’s in the back of everyone’s mind as they venture out into the crowded aisles. Bacteria — and viruses — can stay viable on certain surfaces from hours to weeks. Since we have so much contact with our carts as we trek through the aisles, it’s good to be aware of what undesirable critters that reside on the handles such as e-coli and staph. Not to mention, the risk of cross contamination of our food from raw meat to bird droppings frpm when they get stored in the parking lot. Gross!

5. Do you feel like your grocery bill has only GROWN?

  • With rising and fluxing prices and the status of inflation, food costs are higher than ever. The prices in stores have  discouraged families as well as fuel the temptation to eat unhealthy, and not only seek food outside the house not only for convenience, but price. Food is a necessity. and grocery chains know that more than anyone, and they will do anything they can to keep you spending more. Whether it’s  doubling the size of a store’s shopping carts, or placing shopping baskets “randomly” throughout their store,  there’s a method to their madness. They do this so we end up buying more than we need. This leads to profits for them, possibly unhealthy meals for us, and even increased food waste at home.
